Why the Rules Change for Women's Health in Your 40s and 50s

This article explores one of the most important transitions in a woman's life: the middle years, happening during our 30s, 40s and 50s, when your body begins to change.

While the online world is overflowing with wellness advice, many women are left feeling more overwhelmed and confused than ever about what to trust and what actually applies to them, in the real world. Here, I explore what's really happening during our 30s, 40s and 50s; what your body is asking for, and how a holistic, science-informed approach helps you navigate this chapter with confidence, vitality and optimism.

Key Takeaways:

  • The explosion of women's health information reflects a genuine evolution in scientific research, but navigating what's authentic and what isn't can feel overwhelming.

  • Hormonal changes affect every aspect of a woman's life - physical, mental and emotional - to a level where you may feel you hardly recognise yourself anymore.

  • Your body isn't suddenly working against you, it's adapting to a new stage of life and asking you for different approach in how you care for yourself.

  • The good news is that scientifically-grounded evidence points to simple daily fundamentals that consistently support your whole body, mind and life, so you can navigate your health and wellbeing with confidence and ease - and ignore the nonsense!

There's a seismic shift happening in women's health, but the most important changes are not in the media.

Women's health is trending; celebrities, brands and self-proclaimed wellness experts are competing for your attention.

I feel it too; the daily bombardment of social media, top tips, hacks and endless product marketing. Wellness is my passion, my mission and my business; yet, I too, feel tired.

I can't help but wonder, "is this meteoric rise of women's wellbeing at risk of destroying our wellbeing?"

You've probably felt the disappointment of wasting your time, money, energy and trust on false promises.

I certainly have. Long before women's health became the mainstream topic it is today, I was searching for answers.

I tried all the 'silver bullets' the internet could throw at me. But of course, none of them worked - they never do.

Instead, the real shift happened quietly and undramatically, through small intentional changes I made in my daily life; ones I could manage on a hectic schedule, that gave me confidence and helped me take back control.

From 17 years of consistently integrating this lifestyle, here's what I can tell you:

  • The changes I made then are now so ingrained I don't think about them; they're just part of who I am.

  • The compound effect has been health-changing and life-changing, in a way I never imagined.

  • I don't feel like a different person. I feel like myself, and it's honestly the best I've ever felt.

I started this journey quite early and at times felt very alone. Now it's different. So many women, in their 30s, 40s and 50s are fed up of unrealistic "wellness", are questioning the hype and hyperbole, doing their own research and charting their own path - quietly and intentionally.

Long-lost wisdom is resurfacing and being shared woman-to-woman. Honest, grounded and sensible conversations are being had.

It's why I'm sharing this now.

You are not in this alone.

Why the time for women's health is NOW.

For most women in their 30s, 40s and 50s these years span a phase of change, re-evaluation and transformation; in the rhythms of their body, the workings of their brain and in their priorities for life.

I hear women calling this their "No B.S. Era" and honestly, me too - isn't it about time?

Most of us built our careers, relationships and identities around being high-achievers in everything we do, supporting others and holding everything together.

Without even realising it - we lost touch with ourselves.

And then it happens: your body starts to feel unfamiliar, your energy dips for no reason, you worry about things that didn't affect you before, your tried and tested strategies don't seem to work, and it all becomes yet another thing weighing on your mind.

This can feel like betrayal; because your health, energy and confidence are your foundation for everything in life.

The condition of your body and brain, the organism from which you experience everything, directly impacts the life you've built for yourself and for your most important people.

Feeling comfortable, strong, confident and happy in your body gives you the freedom to make courageous and bold decisions for your life, ones aligned with what you truly want.

It supports you through change and powers your life with energy, clarity and confidence.

And it's not too late. You can build unshakeable foundations; no matter how you feel now, or where you're starting from.

What’s actually happening in your body as you navigate hormonal changes.

Isn't it crazy that only now are female hormones being properly researched; that finally we have answers.

So what IS happening?

At some stage during your 30s, 40s, or 50s, you'll enter perimenopause. This is considered to be the phase where you go from your regular cycle to a cycle that is inconsistent, for you.

The reason this happens is that hormones, primarily oestrogen and progesterone, that have choreographed your cycle since puberty, start behaving differently.

During the years leading up to menopause - the moment in time that your periods fully stop - the number of eggs in your ovaries declines and are no longer released in the same regular monthly rhythm.

Oestrogen continues to increase monthly, but in a month when your ovaries don’t release an egg, there’s no progesterone.

This creates a ratio imbalance of too much oestrogen in relation to progesterone and this is what can start to trigger symptoms.

No two of us will experience exactly the same.

What you were never told is that these hormonal fluctuations can occur for a decade in the lead up to menopause.

This is why from your 30s, crescendoing into your 40s and 50s, you can start to notice that the things you used to do, in terms of exercise, nutrition and relaxation, but also in terms of your wider lifestyle, mindset and life aspirations, don’t quite seem to fit any more.

Women have not equated the way they feel during this time with hormonal changes, because they didn't even know it was happening.

You've been taught to believe that these experiences are the start of decline, just “getting older", but it's not true. Hormonally driven symptoms can be mitigated, peak health span can be extended and quality of life can even be elevated.

This is a time when body, mind and soul finally find alignment.

It’s not worse, it’s different, and it can be much better.

The changes that happen can feel really fast, especially in your 40s.

Often clients say to me; ”it’s not fair” - because it feels like nothing works.

But it isn't that nothing works. It's that nothing you've been taught to believe from mainstream ideas about health, fitness, success and life works, anymore.

Your body is incredibly powerful: when you give it the right information it knows what to do.

But the right information isn’t bio-hacks, top 5 tips, one thing every woman over 40 needs to do, or wildly expensive supplements.

Your body is too intelligent for that and your life is far more complex and unique than that.

Your physical, mental and emotional health are all interconnected.

You can’t address just one thing. You have to address everything.

But if you’re not feeling consistently at your most energetic, vibrant and brilliant self, when your life already feels overwhelmingly full, how on earth can you contemplate addressing everything?

From my work, coaching over a hundred clients, I want you to know: you are already doing everything you need to do.

Your mission now is to identify what’s already strong and good (and celebrate that!) and what could use some extra care and attention, and get intentional about that.

You don’t need more willpower. You don't need more time.

You need a pattern that makes sense for your hormones, your nervous system and your life.

This is what I discovered for my own life and it's how I guide my clients to find their own rhythm, achieve their goals and build the health and happiness they deeply want.

Welcome to the SHINE Framework.

I built the SHINE Framework first for myself, when I was still working in the corporate world, managing a team, navigating crazy deadlines and travelling three weeks out of four. I was stressed, exhausted and didn't recognise my own body. For a long time I was deceiving myself that I was "fine".

But things weren't fine.

I didn't like how my body felt and I didn't like how my mind felt. I didn't feel confident and, at times, I didn't really feel well. I had high blood pressure, suffered migraines, got sick often, didn't exercise regularly enough, reached for sugar as an energy fix and wine as a self-soother. I wasted a small fortune on all the 'quick-fixes' money could buy.

I knew I was letting myself down: somehow, something had to change.

At that time, I didn't call it SHINE, it was simply necessity. Little by little, step by step, through trial and error, I researched deeply, made the changes, and changed my life.

Through my work, this became the SHINE Framework; the 5 foundational pillars of health and wellbeing that affect how a woman feels each day; how you function and your long-term health and happiness.

How do you know this is true?

Because you already do all of these things, consciously or unconsciously, just to survive. When you do them well and with intention, then you flourish. Beyond the noise of the online world of wellness, in the real scientific research and in real life - this is where the answer to true health and wellbeing abides.

It's in the simple acts of elevating your everyday life.

Each of the pillars of the SHINE Framework works synergistically with all the others. This is what makes it so powerful.

It doesn't matter where you start, what matters is that you do start.

When you uplevel one pillar of SHINE, you positively influence them all, which makes it easier and more impactful when you take your next step.

The LifeForce Wellness SHINE Framework - the five fundamental pillars of health & wellbeing for women.

The SHINE Framework won't fail you.

It isn't a rigid set of rules you have to follow. It's insight and, most importantly, it's an invitation. Use it to identify what's already strong in your life and where you have the opportunity to make a positive change, then make a positive change.

Believe in better

There's something else that's as important as the things you do.

It's how you think.

How we view ageing, how we think about health and specifically women’s health, culturally and societally, shapes how we view ourselves personally.

We need to be very aware and intentional because our perception and our narrative drives our experience, both physiologically and psychologically.

More than one billion women around the world are currently experiencing perimenopause and menopause. Plus another 3 billion women who have either gone through or will go through menopause.

Imagine the power of 4 billion women supporting each other and re-claiming our narrative.

That is a movement.

We have this power: to build new systems and upgrade our quality of life.

As neuroscientist Dr Tara Swart describes: your belief system creates your reality, your thoughts create your beliefs and you can choose what you think.

Collectively we can decide to change what we think, change how we live and change our reality.

Final thoughts

Your health isn't about finding the perfect supplement, following the latest trend, fixating on benchmarks or tracking stats. This is far too superficial, distracts you from what's really important and diverts you down a path that may not be right for you.

Instead, you'll find true wellbeing in the simple fundamentals of your everyday life: the 5 pillars of your SHINE Framework.

You'll find it in patterns that come from understanding and honouring yourself and your own unique needs and responding with knowledge, compassion and intention.

The years ahead can be the healthiest, strongest and most fulfilling of your life. When you stop fighting your body and begin working with it, when you stop comparing yourself to others and know what it is that you need, you discover that this isn't the beginning of decline, it's the beginning of a different, more easeful and aligned way of living.

Your questions answered

1. Why is women's health suddenly such a big topic?

Because it's finally receiving scientific attention and funding. As research into female physiology accelerates, more women are recognising themselves in conversations about hormones, metabolic health, brain health, longevity and nervous system regulation - and they're talking about it. At the same time, increased media attention means it can be difficult to separate evidence-based research from opportunistic marketing.

2. Is it normal to feel different in my late 30s or 40s, even if my periods are still regular?

Hormonal changes begin many years before menopause, often during your late 30s or early 40s. These fluctuations can influence energy, sleep, mood, concentration, recovery and body composition long before you notice your periods becoming irregular. It's also important to know that every single woman experiences this time differently.

3. Why do the health strategies that worked in my twenties no longer seem effective?

Because your physiology has changed. As hormones fluctuate, the way your body responds to exercise, nutrition, stress and recovery changes too. This doesn't mean your body is broken or that your health is deteriorating. Your body is signalling that it needs a different kind of support. Learning how to work with your biology sets you up to navigate this phase of life with more understanding, more tools in your toolkit and to come out on the other side of menopause, physically and emotionally, better than you can possibly imagine.

4. Why take a holistic approach instead of focusing on one problem at a time?

The body doesn't operate in separate compartments. It's a finely tuned and intricately interconnected system. Hormones, sleep, nutrition, movement, stress, mindset and environment constantly influence one another. A whole-person approach recognises these connections and honours the complexity of being human. It helps create improvements that are sustainable because they reflect how the body and life actually work.

5. What is the SHINE Framework and how can it help?

The SHINE Framework is beautifully simple, science-backed and designed to help you restore energy, support hormonal health and feel more like yourself again -  without restrictive routines, overwhelm or sacrificing the life and career you’ve worked hard to build.

Rather than adding more pressure or more "to-do" lists, it's entirely personalised and guided by your own goals and preferences.

SHINE is the framework that helps you get crystal clear on where you feel the most confident about your health and wellbeing; what’s in good shape, what could use a little attention, and to create simple, uplifting and nourishing tweaks in your everyday life.

If you've been looking for a place to start, or want to elevate your existing routines - this is it!

SHINE is the framework that I use with my 1:1 clients. Take a look at the SHINE Framework here.
